My name is Eric Smith and I stand before you today to announce my
candidacy for NC House District 65. A portion of the Declaration of Independence
states. “When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people
to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to
assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which
the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them. Governments are instituted
among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That
whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the
Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government.”
We are all aware how corrupt Raleigh is but Corruption is not just Jim Black
stealing elections, stealing the legislature and taking bribes. It is not just Tom
Wright taking $300,000 from his campaign and not reporting the contributions. It’s
not just the Legislative Black Caucus taking corporate payoffs disguised as
charitable contributions for the needy to pay for the legislators’ kids’ college
expenses. Corruption is also sitting around as an elected official and letting it
happen.
Our schools are in the bottom teir of the nation The legislatively imposed
statewide cap of 100 charter schools should be lifted, allowing the number of
charters to grow as long as parents, educators, and oversight agencies ensure
accountability for results.
We must provide tax credits or vouchers for school choice. There are
currently over 58,000 students enrolled in home schools and over 91,000 enrolled in
private schools. All NC families should be allowed to set up educational savings
accounts, with an annual tax-deductible deposit of $4,500 per child, from which
they can withdraw funds tax-free for educational expenses such as textbooks,
educational materials, or tuition incurred at any time from preschool through
college. Needy students in public schools where fewer than 60 percent test at
grade level should get $4,500 scholarships to attend private, charter or home
schools.
We must end the discrimination of US Citizens vs. illegal aliens. If a natural
born American Citizen enrolls their child in a public school they must provide a birth
certificate, Social Security number, and medical records. If an illegal alien enrolls
their child all they need is a family bible with the child’s name and date of birth
written in it.
In North Carolina it costs the taxpayers over $800 million per year to educate
illegal alien students and children of illegal aliens.
Our students are suffering when there is an Honors History book in our curriculum
that has no mention of Ronald Reagan’s Berlin wall speech but room for a Spanish
glossary. I don’t know about you but I would rather have Ronald Reagan than a
Spanish Glossary.
