| This page will post votes that the Rockingham County Commissioners have had before them and how I would have voted on the issue at hand. For the most part I will only place votes that effect budget issues, issues on freedoms and Liberties and other issues of importance. I probably will not post votes on resolutions that honor people, places or things. I will start with the December 2004 meeting as that would have been my first as a county commissioner. |
December 6th 2003 Items on Consent Agenda $23,000 to buy new computers and software for the Elections Department. NAY Considering new powerful computers can be purchased for near $500 and only four people work in the Elections Department, $23,000 is going to buy some real nice computers, something that NASA would probably envy, or a supplier is planning on milking the Rockingham County Elections Department. A $350,000 corporate welfare payment to boilmaker Weil-Maclean. NAY This is part of a much larger welfare package to entice the company to locate in Eden. $10,000 to sterilize low income men and women. NAY Do I need to even comment on this one? $1,300 to increase somebody's salary in the Department of Social Services. NAY Does this department not have a pay scale that includes raises? $15,000 to buy new uniforms and a 40 mm grenade launcher with a "holographic sight" for the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department. NAY Why does the Rockingham County Sheriffs Department need a 40mm grenade launcher? $6,000 for additional funding for "Support Our Students program for middle school students." NAY Where does it end? Schools are good and we need to provide for an education, but I can support them with out handing over $6000.00 $20,000 for the Monroeton Fire Department. NAY This would be a vote that I would absolutly have to know what the money was to be used for. And with it being on the "Consent Agenda" with no discussion I would have to say no. $1,000 to buy a new computer printer for the Medicaid Department. NAY You can buy a very nice printer for under $200.00 Items not on the consent agenda $42,000 to hire an additional Social Worker in the Department of Social Services. NAY Isn't it just better to teach responsibility than to hire more people? Board Elections converting a temporary part-time employee to permanet full-time position. NAY Considering we have at the absolute most in any year is 4 elections I think that the current staff is doing a fine job and funding should actually be cut in this department. I actually know the person they want to "up-grade" and while she is a friend of a friend I just could not justify it. $186,000 to protect Rockingham County from terrorists. According to Emergency Services Director Steve Hale, the money will be used to harden the county's computer system against hackers and install a reverse 9-1-1 system. The reverse 9-1-1 system will make it possible for local officials to telephone county residents to order an evacuation or a "lock-down." NAY This goes directly agianst my Patriot Act Resolution. I can not imagine spending this kind of money when there is absolutly no threat of terrorist ever comming to Rockingham County. And even if they did do you really think that a "Reverse 9-1-1 system" would actually save anyones life? Home Return to Rockingham County Issues |
